How 21st Century Learning is Preparing Students to be Global Leaders

Written by Rajeev Katyal, Country Director, Singapore | October 19, 2018

At Global Indian International School (GIIS) in Singapore, we understand that to be successful in today's diverse society, students need more than the traditional classroom experience. In addition to a solid foundation in mathematics, science and the humanities, we emphasise effective collaboration, healthy communication and core values.

Academic Achievement

Our rigorous K-12 curriculum prepares students for university and the workforce. Our approach fosters independent inquiry and exploration, encouraging students to take ownership of their learning.

A Supportive Community

At GIIS Singapore, we strive to ensure that each child is recognised and accepted as a valued member of the school community. Teachers get to know students individually and incorporate their interests into the curriculum. Additionally, we offer a variety of extracurricular activities, such as our sports programme and skills-based programmes, in which all students are encouraged to participate.

Engaging in the Digital Age

Technology can make communication less personal, but we believe that when applied appropriately, it can actually bring people together. Students use virtual platforms to connect with teachers across our various campuses. To ensure that they can keep up with the frenetic pace of technology development, we provide ample opportunities for our students to give multimedia presentations at assemblies and other events.

Values

We instil in our students a profound understanding of universal values and ethics. With its emphasis on supporting a well-rounded learning experience, our balanced approach nurtures students' personal development, modelling prosocial behaviour and empathy. Our students also regularly give back to the community through service projects, such as donating to charities and visiting the elderly in nursing facilities.

Communication and Collaboration

We support children as they cultivate the skills necessary for effective communication: reading, writing, speaking and listening. In addition to traditional methods of communication, we encourage our students to express themselves through creative means, such as drama, music and dance. Doing so not only teaches children to explore different modes of communication but also fosters an appreciation of culture and the fine arts.

Students further cultivate their communication and teamwork skills through collaborative projects. Working in pairs or small groups, students learn how to share responsibility whilst they sharpen their critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Innovation and Leadership

We encourage students to take initiative in their learning, and we provide plenty of guidance along the way. Students frequently showcase their talents at school-wide events and engage in projects that promote innovation and entrepreneurial skills. We ensure that our students have access to ongoing academic support and career counselling. We also connect them with leaders throughout Singapore and beyond who can serve as mentors and role models.

At GIIS Singapore, we provide an integrated learning environment that prepares students to be lifelong learners who use their skills and talents to improve the world around them.
