People say there is magic in music, that it's a true language of the soul.

Research says those people are right.  According to peer-reviewed studies in major publications, music education can elevate children's IQ, improve their emotional outlook and enhance academic achievement in non-music subjects.

According to Stephen Moss at The Guardian
, "Learning to read and play music gives you access to a new language, other worlds." In fact, music education lies at the heart of Finland's world-renowned educational system. The causal link between music and academic performance should come as no surprise since music theory is closely linked to mathematics.

    The Importance of Teaching Ethnomusicology

"Music Creates Joy and Ecstasy that takes us into another world" - Shankar Mahadevan

Learning music is critical to a broad-based education, and today's students have plenty of genres to choose from when it comes to learning music from Hindustani Classical and Carnatic to Western Classical and Popular.  While all styles of music can be fun and helpful, developing a rich, multicultural musical palette is key to encouraging integration and cultural empathy.

7Z3A3647Minority students and their parents living in an unfamiliar place especially need experiences that root them in their home. These families can use music as a way to protect their cultural heritage against the tide of uniformity and the extinction of cultural uniqueness.

For children at the Global Indian International School (GIIS) who are living away from their country of origin, learning music as it is taught back home is one way of keeping in close touch with their homeland.

    How GIIS' Music Studios Work

GIIS provides a platform for students to learn the ancient art forms of music that have helped many great singers build firm musical foundations.  As part of GIIS' skills-based pedagogy, the school provides music studios for children to learn under top-quality teachers, practice what they know and perform before a receptive audience.

The music studios are divided between learning and jamming classes, and sound-proof rooms 7Z3A3651allow students to engage in concentrated practice during their leisure time.  Our children also have access to comfortable facilities in which they can tune their instruments. Plus, GIIS invested in state-of-the-art technology such as voice-modulating microphones so students can train to be modern performers with a full range of 21st-century skills.

    Music Education Theory at GIIS

At GIIS, music studios are more than an extra layer of learning.  They are woven tightly into the fabric of our educational model. As a school committed to the values of teamwork, attitude before knowledge and managing with information and metrics, GIIS makes sure that our students don't top off their education with music. They truly engage with its historic, cultural and mathematical core.

The idea behind the music studios emerged as a way to teach children skills beyond academia and sports. GIIS is committed to helping our learners excel in all areas of life, to tap into their individual potential and to polish their inborn talents.  In this way, our graduates go into the world with a sharp competitive edge.
